Kubed Stock Cubes

Packaging Design

Conceptual packaging design for stock cubes that encourage you to play with your food.

The brief was an open one, to create a visual brand for an everyday consumer product and develop appropriate packaging. I decided upon stock cubes, made by the fictitious company Kubed.

My development work and idea generation process led me down the route of developing Tetris inspired boxes, with a differing shape and colour for each type of stock. The block-based theme was inspired by the 8-bit graphics, with the food icons drawn to maintain the theme, along with the subtle square/pixelated overlay on the boxes.

Ensuring that the legal and functional requirements (barcode, nutrition, ingredients, weight, etc.) were adhered to required use of a font that can be reduced yet still remain legible. Each square of the box is 30mm, so the font used was Verdana and, in some cases, the point size reduced to 4 and the kerning and tracking tweaked a little.
