Brochure Design
Design, layout and product photography for a new printed brochure.
At the International School Aberdeen (ISA) they don’t wear a school uniform. However, sometimes, it is necesary to identify as being a student of the school. SpiritWear was origionally just items of clothing in the school colours (red and black) that bear the school logo but now it is is more than that. It encompases various items (jackets, sporing equipent, bags, notebooks, and even bow-ties and tablecloths).
Run by volunteers from the Parent Teacher Organisation (PTO), the SpiritWear team sell ISA branded apparel that the students can wear either casually or as part of their curricular activities. ISA also has its own tartan and is available in various items from scarves to tablecloths.
Naturally, the SpiritWear team wanted to showcase all the varied items they sell but have never presented their merchandise in a catalogue before. The process began by identifying what they wanted to include and taking the product photographs. Once all the photos were collated, the product descritions where writen and the real task of designing the layouts began.
Initially they had several different order forms for different products. It made sense to unify these into a single form that would be an insert in the catalogue. The form must be easy to complete (especially when ordering for several children, all in different sizes and all wanting different colours) and, similarly, easy to process by the PTO when fulfiling the order.
The item prices were intentionally not printed in the catalogue – they only appear on the form – so the brochure doesn’t need re-printing each time a price changes. The forms can be printed at home so, while I was happy to introduce colour into the design, I didn’t want too much in order to minimise printer-ink usage.
I kept the cover simple – I wanted a striking image that reflected the school colours but without the inclusion of photography.
